It’s time to make weekend radio cool again! This is not to say that weekend radio is presently uncool but rather that it could be made a whole lot cooler. Speaking with my weekend radio teammates, many have expressed a desire to see an updated core schedule which better accommodates the diverse range of radio shows LSR has to offer. My proposal for an updated schedule is as follows:

• A brand new ‘Sunday Lunch’ show. Sunday is lacking a lead show similar to Saturday Brunch and the weekday Hometime and Breakfast shows. The launch of Sunday Lunch would bring Sunday broadcasts, which are often forgotten about, up to speed with the rest of the week.

• The Arts Show has outlived its purpose. Speaking to members of the Arts Show, they have expressed that many of the shows topics are already covered by separate shows (e.g. Box Office covers films, Curtain Call covers musicals and theatre, and there are already a plethora of specialist music shows). In order to preserve the weekend coverage of arts and culture I would propose dissolving the Arts Show and making Curtain Call a new core show. Curtain Call and Box Office would then replace the Arts Show in covering topics of art and culture. This would also allow for the Science Show to be more fleshed out as it would no longer have to share its slot with the Arts Show.

As your weekend editor I would also continue to organise engaging socials for the team - karaoke nights at Hyde Park pub would be a must! Furthermore, I would respect the sacred tradition of supplying snacks (and capri suns) to all weekend presenters.

Yet, you may be thinking, why Dillon? As I have spent my first year with LSR as part of the weekend team presenting ‘Undies’ and ‘Oi, You!’, I understand the role weekend radio plays in showcasing diverse and collaborative radio. I believe that my proposal for a refreshed schedule demonstrates my desire to uphold these core values, whilst providing Saturday and Sunday broadcasts with a much-needed breath of fresh air.

LSR is a welcoming, fun and eye opening environment and by voting for me as Weekend Editor, I will do my best to ensure that everyone has this same positive experience.

This university year, I’ve done the Indie & Alternative show, The Saturday Brunch Show and a podcast, ‘Miffed Off’. Being involved in these shows has built my organisational skills as well as being able to communicate with others! I’ve really enjoyed the team work that goes into creating a good radio show and think it’s so important to work together so that we can all improve and learn new skills as presenters and producers. From doing both a music show and a weekend show, I’m familiar with the importance of both having a good laugh on air as well as playing good tunes. I would love to encourage people to continue to be open about their takes on hot topics and new music.

One of my aims as weekend editor would be to get more listeners involved. The weekend is a perfect time for students to listen to us so we must continue to connect with them to optimise Saturday and Sunday listening. By finding out what our listeners want to hear about through methods such as social media or asking around on campus, we can make listening to LSR a part of student life. In order to do this, creative input is key and that’s why as Weekend editor, I would prioritise encouraging new show ideas. This could range from episode specials, guests or collaborations with other shows. Student radio is the perfect space to try out things, sell your ideas and have fun with your creativity! It’s important to recognise hot topics as well as what you want to cover so brainstorming for each show will keep it interesting for everyone!

Moreover, I think bouncing off of other people and getting others’ input always makes a show so much better. Organising themed socials is such an important way for people to get to know each other and have a laugh. For me, it introduced me to what radio is all about and I would love to continue to encourage authenticity and creativity through being Week-end editor.

This year I’ve been away from Leeds on a Year in Industry and I’ve really missed LSR, so I want to make up for it by being on committee 😃


Ideas for Weekends on LSR

• Make the most of the Instagram by adding 'meet the editor' and 'meet the team' posts to help add faces to the voices behind the weekend shows. I’d also work with the weekend presenters to produce Instagram content to promote their shows, including supporting them to set-up their own pages if they’d like to.

• Help the Weekend Core Shows present from places outside the union, relevant to their show (like how Hometime presented from Pubs this year).

• Host Weekend Specific Socials: in my first year I found it difficult to go to whole Society Socials on my own, so I'd like to have Weekend Specific Socials and Meet-Ups ahead of larger socials, so everyone can feel comfortable meeting their fellow LSR members. Madina has held Weekend socials this year, so I’d love to continue them. Some ideas include pub quizzes, bowling, and laser tag; but I’ll be open to suggestions from Weekend members.

• Increase interaction between the Core Shows by having one-off crossovers where the teams discuss a topic relevant to both shows!


About Me

• I study Physics and I’m currently doing a Technology Industrial Placement year at Vodafone.

• My LSR experience includes presenting ‘The Science Show’ and ‘Saturday Brunch’, so I know my way around weekend shows! I’ll be happy to help the teams as much or as little as they would like.

• In 2nd year I was a manager of one of the Music Society Orchestras, meaning I was part of the ‘Wider Exec Committee’. Having had this role means I understand what it takes to be on committee and that I can handle the workload on top of my studies. In this role, I also started the Orchestra’s Instagram page, so I know how to produce content and I am ready to take on the LSR Weekends page.



Overall, I want to provide a welcoming and supportive environment to help LSR members produce the best Weekend content possible!
