Hi. I'll skip the boring introductions and skip to the good stuff (for those who don't know me, I am a BSc and MGeol student on the geology integrated master's programme, returning from my year abroad in Canada at the University of Alberta. I am a driven induvial with a passion for economic geology.) There are many reasons why I believe I should be Vice President of the SEG Student Chapter here at the University of Leeds. The main few are that I've now spent nearly three years as part of this society and seen what works well and what doesn't. This means I know what needs to be done to make this student chapter run smoothly. This involves active partaking by all committee members, especially the president and vice president. I have many qualities that I bring to the table such as organisation, teamwork, independence, punctuality, and leadership. These are all important for this role, as the president and vice president form the backbone of the society. I have much experience in all of these qualities, enhanced by events put on by previous year's committees, within my university courses, and outside of it.
On the leadership side, I have captained both my u15's and u18's cricket sides for my club, and now coach them, also having vice captained last season for the university development squad. I am also currently vice captain for my club's Sunday side. This shows I have experience with leadership and teamwork, while retaining the ability to work independently and work to separate deadlines.
Organisation and punctuality were key skills developed during my year abroad at the University of Alberta. Having to do everything myself whilst balancing my Leeds academics, besides the actual going to Canada by myself. As for teamwork within a committee, I have experience from college as part of the Student Exec at NEW College Pontefract during 2021/22. I know what is required of me for giving my time to the society, as I have attended many events in the past, and feel now a responsibility to repay the favour back to the society and give it my all to make sure the society thrives long after I graduate. For my career at Leeds, I was course rep during second year, liaising with multiple faculty members and sending out many emails and questionnaires to gain an understanding of my fellow students' experience, and then acted upon this feedback. Also, last year, I was part of the podcast which this student chapter entered into the SEG podcast competition, coming away with an honourable mention.
As for what I bring to the society, I have gained experience from those listed above, and my time in Canada. Being a part of the P.S Warren Geoscience society at the University of Alberta has put a fresh perspective on what a society is all about. Drawing from this experience, I can bring new, exciting ideas to the table such as new field trips (perhaps a trip to PDAC in Toronto?), funding options (how about SEG Leeds Student Chapter merch?), and new events (mineral and rock auction?).
As George is currently the only president candidate, he will mostly likely be president next year. George is a well rounded individual with a passion for economic geology,
much like myself. As we are both on the MGeol course and are both currently abroad in Canada, we are good friends and work well together and can do good work for this society together.
Overall, I know what this society requires of myself and am I prepared to give that and more. The main thing is that we are constantly learning, giving everyone equal opportunities to develop their skill set, and having fun while doing it. The job of the committee, and more specifically the president and vice president, it to make sure this happens.

Having been a member of SEG since the beginning of first year, my involvement with the society has steadily increased, particularly this year in which I took up a sub-committee role. My closer involvement with the society, particularly through attending committee meetings and understanding how it operates, has reassured my intention for this role and its responsibilities. Earlier in March, I helped run a successful annual mini-conference held at the university, having also attended the year prior. I found this a great chance to experience genuine responsibility, as well as connecting with a multitude of speakers from different backgrounds who I would love to have return next year. This, in combination with attending Resourcing Tomorrow (formerly Mines and Money) in London last December and meeting various other guest speakers who have visited the university, has provided me with a good number of connections I believe would be very helpful for future events through SEG.
In terms of my intentions to fulfil the role as Vice, my main priorities would be ensuring that next years mini-conference is provided with plenty of speakers from a wide range of backgrounds and levels of experience, as well as ensuring the society is accessible as possible to first year students. SEG has been very helpful to me in terms of career intention and allowing me to understand how crucial economic geology is to our future, and I would be very grateful for the opportunity to help others understand this too.
