Hi, my name is Silo Firat and I am currently a fourth-year medical student aspiring to become a plastic and reconstructive surgeon. As we all know, we have little to no plastic and reconstructive surgery exposure during medical school, which can have a big impact on the trajectory of tomorrows doctors. From personal experience, I have had to explore extra-curricular routes into gaining experience in this specialty. For example, I have completed a masters in laparoscopic surgery and surgical skills during my intercalation year, and my upcoming elective will be with the plastic and reconstructive surgery department at the Imperial college healthcare trust. I found that gaining and applying for experiences like these can be tough as you’re essentially going in blind. During medical school, I realised that I needed exposure and to build my portfolio to stand a chance of a career in this competitive specialty. If I was elected as the clinical year representative, I would aim to provide guidance for these opportunities to other budding plastic surgeons. Through my personal experiences, I feel that I have a lot to offer as a clinical representative and I would really appreciate your votes.


What I would like to achieve:
• To source surgeons for events within the committee
• Provide a first point of contact for clinical year students, e.g. with regards to electives etc.
• Widen opportunities for students within the specialty
