Hi there! I’m Henry (he/him), I study Zoology here at the university and this is my little ramble telling you why I’d love to be the next Head of Music for LSR.

The key reasons why I would be great for the role:
- I’ve been involved with LSR thoroughly this past year, hosting multiple core shows, those being live and local, and rock and punk. I have also formed my own show with a friend named the Uni Music Library Finds!
- I’ve been keen to help out and get involved beyond the expected hours of my shows, this can be seen most in my coverage of Live @ Leeds Festival with the live and local team
- From my time at LSR and before, recording my podcast, I’ve had extensive experience forming opportunities and hosting interviews with independent artists/bands
- I helped the Live and Local team win the Best Music Show Award at the winter award show (Love you guys!)
- By creating my own show ‘UML finds”, i have helped form a better connection with the music library society, which I’d love to make stronger
- I have also got experience contacting and organising charity events. This is something that would help when planning events e.g. transmission :)

Ideas I have for LSR:
- Host some Live performances on the core shows! Also encourage and guide those with own shows to showcase their own, or a friend’s musical talent.
- With Leeds being such a diverse community, I think there should be a greater emphasis on showcasing international music. This would be an amazing way of showcasing such amazing music and helping LSR become an even safer more inclusive place
- Similarly, I would love to further help promote and platform more LGBT+ artists on LSR,
- I would love to reach out and work with BPMsoc to encourage people to use studio 2 (if it works) to record live Dj sets for broadcast
- We need to cover Leeds Jazz Festival more!!
- The core shows having weekly updated playlist. this would help grow engagement on social media!
- I would love to help organise more guests or pre-recorded interviews for the core shows :)

Hello! My name is Poppy and I'm a second year BA Politics student at the University of Leeds! I’ve been at LSR since first year and I can confidently say it’s been responsible for boosting my confidence like nothing I've ever done before. Because of this, I'm super excited to be potentially involved with the committee and help grow the LSR environment that has been so good to me and my self-esteem.

So what are my ideas? I really want LSR to continue to push its diversity in every single aspect possible. As a politics student, I am always seeking to explore and understand the bureaucratic and social contexts behind everything, and undoubtedly understand how important this is for music. My own show which I have been running since the beginning of the academic year has honed in on this political context in regards to the rock and punk genre, however I understand this topic is extendable to all musical genres, and is an aspect I would love to explore within LSR music in the future, with increased education into historical and social contexts of music in order to feel more connected to genre and be overall more informed on our world through the creative arts.
LSR music is already an incredibly inclusive environment, something which I am undeniably dedicated to continuing. One aspect which i’d love to explore to do this is spotlighting musical niches and sub-genres which may have been previously overlooked within the radio world. The already thriving LSR social media would be key in facilitating this, due to its ability to closely engage with members and listers it’s the perfect place to hear back from students about what music they want showcased that they may not have heard before, and i’d absolutely be dedicated in using our social media to consistently engage with students to keep LSR sounding like our listeners.

However, I understand that people may find music daunting sometimes, from the ever changing music scene we live within today it may be difficult for people to know where to start exploring new music, and I do not want this to be overshadowed. The current focus on local music is an incredible step in showcasing up and coming artists with potential, however I think this can be taken a step further with a focus on newly released music, to not only help showcase diverse and electrifying new music, but to also shine a light on new art which people may find captivating, therefore inspiring more and more people to get involved with more music and expand their listening tastes!

I hope my experience at LSR can only reinforce faith in me to stay dedicated to my goals within the LSR music team. I have been heavily involved in the rock and punk scene of the station, after hosting the Rock and Punk show for two semesters, and my own show The Politics of Punk, which have both taught me vital teamwork and personal organisational skills that I know are indispensable when taking on a challenging role such as Head of Music, as I was in charge of producing, promoting and presenting my own show whilst juggling other LSR projects I was involved with.

Whilst I have gained efficiency skills from my time at LSR already, I have also been able to grow my musical and social knowledge through my co-hosted podcast, the Fan Girl Pod. This has been an incredibly gratifying experience to be a part of, as I was able to learn about and showcase the work of incredible women and non-binary creatives, from the words of other women, whose lives have been positively affected by the work of these talented individuals. I feel this has not only educated me, but proves to be an aspect of music which should always be important through LSR, and I will only continue to push for political education surrounding music and genre.

One of my most recent involvements was the LSR into Schools, which focused on teaching 16-18 year olds about the opportunities and gratifications of student radio. I found this rewarding and encouraging, as I was able to engage with young people who had interest in music and radio and could discover their outside views on what they want to see from the radio industry in the future, information that Id love to apply to LSR music in order to keep it up to date with the new student population.

Thank you for reading this far! I would like to leave my statement with the final message of accessibility and inclusion for every single student. No matter what music they listen to, or how much they engage with it. Everyone deserves to be represented on LSR.

Being head of music for LSR is a super exciting opportunity and I would absolutely love to take on the responsibility of doing! For the past year, I have hosted Leeds what’s happening every Saturday and have absolutely loved every second of it! I knew I wanted to run for committee as soon as I started as I found radio so fascinating. As the shows went on, I found myself increasingly talking about the topic of music! From live music events going on in Leeds, to new artists and music recommendations! I am super passionate about music and have discovered multiple up and coming artists by going to local gigs at venues such as Brudenell social club and Hyde Park book club. I am confident at talking and working with new people, and am a reliable person to take on tasks, making sure they always get done to the best of my ability! I really value teamwork and would love to work alongside people who are just as passionate about radio and music as me!

Hey everyone, I'm Malaika, a second-year media and comms student, a Hip Hop, Rap and R&B presenter at Leeds Student Radio. As Head of Music, I'll expand our station's repertoire, by diversifying the genres we promote, particularly R&B, Jazz, Hip Hop and Rap, create engaging content on TikTok and Instagram, and foster partnerships with local cultural organisations like Leeds Inspired. I'm committed to bringing fresh energy, creativity, and inclusivity to our station.

MY HEAD OF MUSIC TO-DO LIST:
- I aim to introduce a new Folk & Country core music show to LSR. I feel this is an underrepresented genre on the radio and I am confident this is something people will be interested in

- Being a queer and non-binary person, I want to be a representative for and help uplift people of marginalised identities on the radio

- I hope to work with LSR and UML to continue to showcase local artists both on the radio itself and via gigs and socials as well as LSR live lounges which I hope to help develop

- I want to prioritise making press passes and guest list tickets accessible for aspiring music journalists, especially for those who are marginalised or underrepresented in the industry

- Transmission '25 – I strive to work with promising local artists and venues along with LSR members to put on the best Transmission to date!!
