My name is Layla Birt :) and I am in my first year, studying BSc Sociology, Social Policy and Crime. I would like to apply for the role of Social Secretary at Leeds University’s Islamic Society.



I am highly enthusiastic about this role on the iSoc committee, because through this first year at Leeds so far, the Islamic society has represented a home away from home for me. The ISoc has helped me to feel grounded and connected to community, even as university has been the most hectic time in my life so far, and I would like to give back the same to others if possible.



I understand the many challenges that new and returning students face, between navigating academic and social environments. Being a minoritised Muslim student helps me understand how isolating university can feel and this is why social events are so important in bringing people together. This awareness will help me to plan along with the team, events for students across campus, and build their sense of belonging in the Islamic Society. In organising a variety of events, and offering opportunities for students to make new friendship networks, we can help every student feel valued through their time as Muslim students. Islamic principles emphasise the importance of compassion, empathy, and social justice, and these are values I wish to bring to this role. Working at a cafe for people with special needs, and as a tutor in two schools during my gap year, communication and community and project planning were integral in those jobs, and the skills I learnt are ones I would love to bring into this role too. By working closely with the Islamic society and students, I hope to help students to enjoy their time at university and connect to other Muslims!

My name is Fatimah and I am currently a first year medical student. Next year, I would love to be your Social Sister as part of the ISOC committee! Starting university in a new city was definitely a challenge but after winning the quiz at that first games event (my team quickly realising how super competitive I am), I was instantly at ease surrounded by the muslim community at Leeds, and it has been a highlight getting to know everyone over the year. As social sister next year, I am committed to continue helping others find a home away from home. I understand the importance of social events in bringing people together and promoting both physical and mental well-being, and this will be the vision for next year.

For those who don’t yet know me, allow me to introduce myself…. I am originally from Manchester and I am the eldest child in my family (so responsibility has become second nature to me). In my free time, I enjoy watching Manchester City winning titles (4-peat this year iA) and playing cricket for uni. Some may also say I am a foodie and a shopaholic (mainly my bank statement), but all in all I am a passionate advocate for good times and even better memories! Many people remember me from the snowdon hike as the person that practically flew up the mountain, and with my experiences and ideas, I will also help the ISOC reach new heights, with a fun-packed social calendar !

As an organised individual with excellent time management skills, I am great at coordinating events and ensuring they run smoothly, having been on the committee of my college ISOC. My involvement in various sport and academic societies has equipped me with valuable communication and teamwork skills too. I would bring a friendly and approachable personality to the role, and if stuff gets tough, a reliable shoulder to lean on. Whether it's welcoming new members or collaborating with the wider committee team, I will ensure that everyone feels included and valued within the Society.

Being an active member of ISOC, I have witnessed firsthand the impact of well-organised social events on building connections and fostering a supportive environment, helping not only to build connections with others, but also bringing us closer to our deen. From Fresher’s week, to Charity week and all the events in between, I hope to keep them engaging, enjoyable, and help us reconnect with Islam. Motivated by a genuine desire to promote sisterhood on campus, I am confident in my ability to excel as Social Sister, strengthening our spiritual connection through unforgettable events.
