Hello fellow Chemical Engineering enthusiasts,

My name is Kent (Zijian) Ng, and I am eager to serve as your next President of the Chemical Engineering Society. Over the past year, as your first-year course representative, I have had the distinct privilege of advocating for our class’s needs, organising study groups, and facilitating communication between students and faculty. This role has not only deepened my understanding of the unique challenges we face as chemical engineering students but has also equipped me with the skills necessary to lead effectively and make impactful decisions.

In addition to my experience as a course rep, my bilingual abilities allow me to bridge cultural and linguistic gaps within our diverse community, ensuring that every member feels heard and valued. My aim is to foster an inclusive environment where all voices are acknowledged, and where we can collectively thrive.

If elected as your President, I promise to leverage my experience and skills to:

1. Enhance Networking Opportunities: Building on my role as a course rep, I will expand our connections with industry professionals and alumni, creating more opportunities for mentorship, internships, and job placements.

2. Strengthen Academic Support: I will work to organise workshops and resources that cater specifically to the challenges we face in our coursework and projects, ensuring every member has the support they need to excel.

3. Increase Social and Cultural Events: Recognising the importance of a balanced university experience, I will strive to diversify and increase our social events, ensuring they are inclusive and cater to the interests of our diverse membership.

4. Promote Open Communication: Utilising my bilingual skills, I will ensure that our society is a place where language is not a barrier to participation or understanding. I am committed to fostering an environment where everyone can contribute freely and feel supported.

Together, we can build a society that not only supports our academic and professional development but also celebrates our diverse backgrounds and perspectives. I am dedicated to making our society more connected, inclusive, and successful.

Hello everyone!

My name is Weronika, I am first year student, excited to be running for the role of your ChemEng committee president.

As this year comes to an end, I am fortunate enough to say that I have found my people, my place and myself on this course. This wouldn't have been possible without the opportunities presented by this society, hence why I'm eager to not only share this experience with newcomers, but also with current members, as I understand this course will only challenge us more.

All year round, peers from years above and our tutors, constantly repeat the phrase "it only gets worse from here". Now based on my experience, that is very true (as this course is not for the faint-hearted), HOWEVER it doesn't have to be a miserable ride. Here's why…

Having attended all the events run by the committee this year (…I can't say no to a night out), and being a course representative for the chemical & energy engineering cohort (I'm good at yapping in a professional setting), I can guarantee that a fun work-life balance is absolutely possible.

Connection & growth are my main motivation. As your president, I will ensure that your voice is always heard loud and clear. As members, I aim to make you feel represented, understood and included. I will give 100% in keeping the ChemEng society a safe environment for us all to find our sense of belonging in STEM outside of studies.

Based on feedback from peers and issues raised by members from other year groups (course rep meetings), I aim to achieve this, working alongside other committee members, in the following number of ways:

1. More collaborations with society's in the Leeds Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences - similar to the annual curry night with AvSoc and the orienteering challenge.

2. SCAPE Merch. - school fleeces, hoodies, t-shirts, etc.. Where even an opportunity for charity/fundraising/volunteering events can arise.

3. An improved approach to the peer mentoring scheme - where more structure/guidance is provided for those mentoring, or more opportunities to meet with mentors in a more casual setting for those being mentored.

4. Fortnightly socials - an opportunity to make the most of the amazing Leeds night life, with plenty of student discounts, as well as alcohol-free events & ideas for downtime in between studies and exam periods (hikes/runs/trips/movie nights/quiz nights/coffee mornings).

5. Better and more frequent communications with members - so that more people can be reached across all social media platforms, with plenty of notice given to prepare for events.

6.Keeping events such as the SCAPE ball, Frank Morton Cup, AGM, guest speakers (and more) running as best as they can.

Together lets manage the busy, and sometimes stressful, workload whilst promoting diversity and confidence.
