Hello, my name is Ayoka Leung a first-year BA Fashion Marketing student running for Treasurer of the Hong Kong Society in the coming academic year 2022-2023. As a first-year international student in a new environment, we may confront a range of unexpected challenges, particularly in light of the pandemic situation. By running for a position on the Hong Kong Society’s committee, I hope to use my experiences to assist new freshers to overcome the problems they may face and to organise a variety of activities with my team to allow new freshers to enjoy university life beyond the academic side.

I understand that Treasurer is one of the most crucial roles in the society since this position oversees the financial aspect of the society. One of the key roles is to maintain track of the finances and accurately allocate monetary resources to mitigate losses by adhering to the conditions of Leeds Student Union. A Treasurer is also responsible for contacting various sponsors in order to raise finances for events and to allow members of the society to benefit from the sponsors’ support. It is also critical to keep track of savings to show progress with inflows and outflows of funds, as well as to produce a termly report and yearly budgeting that provides other committee members with an up-to-date account, with the intention of supporting all activity that will be organised and keeping the society running throughout the year.

I believe based on my participation in the Society’s events this year as well as my prior experiences, I am capable of taking the position of Treasurer. This year, I volunteered as a helper in the Leeds Game, which gave me the opportunity to meet other Hong Kong students at the University of Leeds and expand my network to other universities invited to participate. I was also able to work with my future teammates and acquire about how the event is hosted and organised through the Game. Aside from the Leeds Game, I have joined a couple of clubbing events co-hosted by the Society. Apart from having a wonderful time at the club, I have met a lot of other Asians from different societies, which has broadened my network and will enable me to organise events with other societies in the upcoming year. In terms of other recent experiences, I was the president of the Business Club, the house promotion officer, and the class chairperson for two executive years in secondary school. While I was the president of the Business Club, I have guided my cabinet member through the preparation of a Chinese New year’s booth, although the event could not be implemented owing to economic conditions. But throughout the process, I sought to seek for different sponsors for financing and the planning for budgets. Therefore, in addition to fulfilling my responsibilities as a Treasurer, I believe I could also offer further assistance to my teammates, because from all these experiences it has allowed me to build up my communication skills, delegation skills and effective decision-making ability.

To summarise, being the Treasurer of Hong Kong Society, it will provide a valuable opportunity for my character building through collaboration with my peers to create a memorable university experience for incoming freshers. I will be able to carry out my responsibilities as a part of this society, work diligently within the set budget of each proposed events. Based on my experiences from previous commitments, I wholeheartedly believe in my ability to fulfil the requirements of this role.
