I am a year one International Business student, and I am writing this manifesto to apply for the position of secretary of the Hong Kong Society in the coming year. The first year of university is often difficult for everyone. As freshers, they may not be familiar with the environment of Leeds and the atmosphere of the university. For the vast majority, this may be their first time away from family and friends. They may feel homesick, have difficulty and panic about making new friends. As a fresher, I have experienced all of these. So, we would like to provide an environment for them to integrate into campus life and hope the Hong Kong Society will be a shelter, a home to them. I would love to hep play a part in doing this. In the past year, I have been actively involved in events organised by the Hong Kong Society, for example welcoming dinner, Nottingham Game, Christmas Ball and Leeds Game. I also have the opportunity to become a sub-committee member and participate in organising the Fai Chun Workshop. To me, the position of secretary is one of the important roles for a society. The secretary is the backbone of the society and need to ensure things run smoothly. As a secretary, a key responsibility is to keep all files and documents sorted and organised. Paying attention to detail to spot any errors or inconsistencies in the documents is another responsibility of a secretary. Above all, this position needs to communicate what is going on to the members, so they stay involved. Although I have not been a secretary before, the experiences of being a sub-committee member and participating in other groupworks have taught me the importance of teamwork and have given me the ability to play my role as a secretary. A secretary needs to be able to communicate regularly and effectively with others, including internally with the members and externally with other societies. Good communication is more than just speaking, it is also about carefully listening to others. With the experience of working in teams, I have learnt to listen to others’ opinions to reach consensus. Moreover, by having the habit of checking my mailbox every day, I can make sure I do not miss any messages. If I was elected, I will try to make sure everyone enjoys and wants to be part of the Hong Kong Society. To do this, I will give the committee regular, precise and up-to-date records of meetings, to make sure the committee is as organised as it can be. Although my main role is keeping the committee updated with regular meeting notes, I will be open to all member suggestion as I want to make sure the society is acting in the best interests of its members.
