Hi, my name is Nok Tsang, a year one student majoring in civil engineering. I am writing to run for the sports director of Leeds University Union Hong Kong society. As a homegrown HongKonger going to a foreign country in the coming years, feeling lonely and helpless in a new city can be inevitable—the need of adapting to a new culture and a different way of living. Therefore, I’m willing to help freshers fit into their new life as quickly as possible. I would like to bring my strengths to the society. I feel like Hong Kong society is a place that brings comfort to freshers who face anxiety and fear of the unknown. The society organises activities for different occasions and habits for other students, such as organising orientation camps and pre-departure talks. These activities provide the chance of making new friends and can reduce loneliness and prepare freshers for Uni-life even before their departure. This mission made me want to join and contribute to the society.
I am applying for the position of sports director because I believe I have all the talents that suit this role, and this is where my interest is placed. As a sports director, my primary responsibilities would be managing all the sports teams by assisting processes such as captain selection of each sports team and providing assistance when captains improvise in arranging regular training. Teams will be better equipped to achieve better results in different games systematically. Another responsibility would be solving conflicts within the sports teams as there is a lot of body contact in playing sports. As a result, conflicts can appear quickly, and the ability to communicate and solve the conflict and enhance team sprits would be essential. The final job would be communicating with other universities’ sports directors to organise games. According to the above responsibility, teamwork skills, communication, and supportive characteristics would be critical requirements for the post of sports director.
I believe my abilities and experience would make me a perfect candidate. As a participant in the sub-committee, I have an understanding of how the society operates. Also, having the chance in assisting and organise activities is critical as it is a very beneficial part for me. The knowledge of knowing how an event is planned out to the execution part has prepared me very well for the coming year’s activities if I am selected. Also, growing up playing different sports. I would say I know quite many sports, from individual to team’s sports, from worldwide to more casual sports. It helps me organise a wider variety of sports activities throughout the years of playing different sports on different occasions and assisting the functioning of the sports team in different positions and roles, such as team leader, internal and external communicator. These roles made me know the needs and how to run a sports team by doing duties including organising practice, inviting for friendly matches and team building. All these aspects fit the needs of being a sports director.
If I am selected, I will aim to organise sports activities that are more accessible for beginners to get involved by mixing with the traditional events, which will be listed below. Firstly, is to keep organising games as it is the Hong Kong society tradition and is an event that needs to be maintained. I will aim for getting better output from the sports teams. Secondly, to introduce more casual sports activities. By organising some taster sections and more casual for the students to get to know each other and a good time to chill. Thirdly, Gatherings in significant sports events. To provide the chance to let the same sports lover gather to enjoy the game they love.
