Hi! My name’s Jess, I’m a first year Psychology student and I’m excited to be running for the role of Training Sec! I’ve been involved in gymnastics for 12 years now, which shows how passionate I am about the sport. It’s something that’s been a huge part of my life, and I’d love the opportunity to give back by supporting the society where I fell back in love with the sport. I’m currently working at an intermediate level since starting gymnastics at Uni.

I’m a very organised person, which I believe is key for this role. Outside of gymnastics, I help out weekly at a Brownies group where I have a number of responsibilities – including leading activities and organising group events. These experiences have helped me develop the skills needed to manage training sessions and arrange transport efficiently and reliably for all members, as well as helping committee members with other tasks if needed. I’ll help members with info on trainings, competitions and routines and ensure the process is clear and stress-free! I have some judging experience at my home gym within in-house competitions, but I am prepared to become a UGC judge to help out where I can!

I joined the society in second semester, and even though I was a bit of a latecomer, the committee and members made me feel so welcome straight away. That sense of community meant a lot to me, and I’d love the chance to offer the same warm welcome to new starters and freshers next year. My goals are to make training an enjoyable place and ensure sessions are tailored to everyones needs and expectations. Inclusion is such an important factor for me - so I want the society to make everybody feel included and safe, no matter what their experience in gymnastics is. I also want to encourage as many people as possible to compete as I believe it is a great experience!

Hi, I am Amy, a first-year psychology student and I’d love the opportunity to become the training sec for gymnastics next year.

While my first-choice role on committee next year would be Women’s Competition Captain, I’m excited about the Training Sec position as well , it’s a role that perfectly aligns with my experience, passion and commitment to supporting others in the sport.

I believe I’d be a strong fit for this role as well, due to my long-standing involvement in gymnastics. As a qualified gymnastics coach and judge, I have a strong understanding of the sport from both a technical and athlete-centred perspective. As well, I conducted a safeguarding course last year, meaning I have the knowledge to prioritise a safe, inclusive and welcoming environment for all in the gym whether complete beginners or advanced level.

Working at Leeds gymnastics club gives me a unique advantage in understanding both the clubs facilities and also the coaching team. I will work closely with all the necessary coaches and competition secs to ensure everyone is well prepared and confident in the lead up to competitions. By helping create start value sheets and easily check if routines meet the requirements and ensure mock competitions at the gym are available ahead of the competitions.

Volunteering for British Gymnastics for many years, gave me great communication skills and I will bring these to this role, being approachable and reliable. Also, I have seen first hand how national and international competitions are ran.

I will attend the majority of training sessions (I didn’t last year as I work on Tuesdays at the gym so couldn’t make it to NWG in time, however, next year I am bringing my car up so will be able to attend sessions here too) and all competitions. I will organise transport to and from training as well as booking Ubers. Creating spreadsheets to ensure everything runs smoothly. I have proven myself for committee as this year I helped judge at UGC competitions already. Next year I will ensure all members fully understand the requirements for all the competitions.

Most importantly, everyone’s voice should be heard, from training and competitions feedback from members is important to ensure members feel comfortable in the stressful environments, such as at comps. I will create monthly surveys to ensure everyone feels fulfilled with training sessions and communicate with the relevant coaches if anyone has any improvements, such as to maybe include more conditioning and stretching. As I believe it is very important to celebrate everyone’s successes, so I will communicate with the media sec to share new skills, upcoming comps and result highlights well in advance.

As well, I will help out other committee members whenever needed, such as helping judge, respond to any questions on judging and I will help members understand the matrix and code of points if necessary.

Through my experience I have greater understanding of how training sessions are run (as I plan my own weekly), routines are created and how comps are run (I have helped with this multiple times). Being a coach means I have strong experience in planning and running structured sessions, highlighting my organisation and leadership skills.
