Hey, I’m Mohammed, a biochemistry student, and I am standing as a candidate for engagement leader of medicine and health sciences. Most students come here to develop and share their ideas, I’ve seen how much potential students in Health and Medicine have, yet how often we’re left to navigate opportunities alone. Additionally, we have less opportunities to connect ideas in our passion in the field. I want to change that by making experiences more accessible, our community more connected and have clearer support.

As a first year, my best experience here so far has been connecting with and meeting people from different backgrounds, learning from each other through societies and shared activities. I realized how much we can achieve when we’re supported and informed in our fields of study. This pushed me to run for this role.

I will advocate for:

1. Clearer, easier access to placements and internships so students know where to find opportunities and how to secure them. Furthermore, stronger university partnerships in health and biological fields to create these opportunities.
2. Affordability for these opportunities by pushing the university to allocate funds for scholarships that cover basic transport and accommodation costs for these opportunities. No student should have to say no to an internship because of money
3. More engaging, collaborative student spaces and seminars where students can connect and have a chance to develop and share ideas and build a real sense of community.

I am Jun, a second year audiology student studying in Leeds. I have enjoyed my past 1.5 years in Leeds as an allied health student studying, socialising and partaking in activities. However, not everything is all sunshine and rainbows. I personally have come across few challenges studying a course from FMH and many other people from the same faculty have shared similar sentiment too.

For example, fellow students I have talked with have shown concerns regarding reimbursement for their placement travel given they are not reimbursed if it is within Leeds or near their place of residence. Others had expressed their allocated placement had been placed ridiculously far. Other than that, some stated that a few of the lectures seem pointless and boring which makes it difficult for them to even turn up for class.

Collecting feedback from fellow students regarding current issues they are facing and enacting changes upon them with the help of staff and other members such as the student executives could have positive impact on the experience of the students. Hence, there is a need for hosting drop-in feedback sessions allowing school representatives, course representatives and students to voice their concern to someone they trust to enact positive changes revolving around their concerns.

Hi, I’m Salma, a first year Sports Science student and a current course representative. As a rep, I’ve seen how valuable student feedback can be when it leads to real change, and how important it is that students can clearly see the outcomes of the concerns they raise.

Students deserve real value from their degrees, and their feedback should lead to real change. As Faculty Engagement Leader, I will work to ensure student feedback doesn’t stop at being collected but leads to clear action within the faculty, with students able to see how their input leads to improvements.

I will strengthen the connection between students, course representatives, school representatives, and faculty leadership so concerns are communicated clearly and addressed more effectively. When students raise issues about their academic experience, they should know those concerns are being taken seriously and followed up. To do this, I aim to increase the frequency of student-staff partnership forums, as I feel these are the best opportunities to engage with academics and provide as much feedback as possible from students.

By working closely with representatives across Medicine and Health, I will focus on improving transparency, strengthening communication, and ensuring students can clearly see how their feedback leads to meaningful improvements in their academic experience. This also includes supporting and training course reps to use more engaging ways of gathering student feedback beyond surveys and emails, so every student’s voice is heard and can directly benefit the faculty. Additionally, I will ensure students receive clearer communication about important aspects of their academic experience, such as placements, assessment/timetable changes, and opportunities within the faculty.

Hi, I’m Amirtha Sunthera Pandiyan and I’m standing for Faculty Engagement Leader. Having reviewed the recent student surveys on their thoughts on the faculty, I know that many students still feel unheard, undersupported, or priced out in many aspects of university life. As your faculty engagement leader, I will drive much needed changes in the faculty, ensuring that your concerns are carefully considered, acted upon quickly and reported back clearly. My goal is to empower you to engage effectively with faculty, enjoy your time at university, and access the guidance you need to design a postgraduation path that’s right for you.

As a course rep, it became clear to me that while university staff are eager to respond to student feedback and criticisms, it is the students who understand student challenges better than anyone. Progress happens most effectively when we bring staff and students together with clarity, purpose, and a shared plan for change. Seeing cohorts navigate new assessment formats with little revision support and watching commuters miss out due to late communications made it clear that we need practical fixes and transparent followthrough, not slogans.

Changes I’ll make to the faculty student experience

Realworld pathways: Coursespecific career panels (clinical, research, public and private health, charity and alternative routes), a merged Alumni Series (where the journeys of graduates can be heard by current students), and facultyspecific JobLink opportunities that actually match our fields

Social life that fits our reality: Lowcost, inclusive, alcohol and nonalcoholcentered events scheduled around FMH placements and timetables, advertised well in advance (and repeated early/lunch/late so commuters can attend).

Assessment clarity: When formats change, students receive sufficient sample questions, clear revision resources, and early communication — no more guessing.

Listening to my peers, from firstyears to postgrads, showed me that small, consistent improvements (clear signposting, timely updates, quick studysocials) change daily life more than any big promise. That’s the approach I’ll take.

A faculty where communication is clear, early, and consistent: I will make sure information reaches students before you need it — not after. That means early notice on changes to the course, events, deadlines, opportunities, and support. No more sameday announcements, no more hunting through emails: just clear, predictable communication you can rely on every week.

I promise that I’ll keep listening, I’ll act where it counts, and I’ll report back so you can see the progress you made possible.
