Hi! My names Ronan D’Souza and I’m excited to apply for the role of Equality, Diversity & Inclusion Officer within the Cardiology Society. Through my work mentoring widening access medical school applicants, volunteering in global health settings such as Fiji, and teaching as a PALS1 tutor, I’ve developed a strong understanding of how opportunity and representation can shape both access to medicine and engagement within it.

In this role, I hope to build on the society’s fantastic foundations by creating a more inclusive and welcoming space where students from all backgrounds feel empowered to explore careers in cardiology. I would like to focus on certain initiatives such as:

1. Informal talks where clinicians from underrepresented backgrounds share personal experiences working in cardiology, offering an opportunity to ask questions to people working in the field.
2. Regular Journal Club- a space to discuss research that highlights cardiovascular innovation and encourages critical thinking when analysing research.
3. CV-Building sessions– a practical, demystifying teaching for students who feel unsure how to get started in cardiology research, or audits, especially those without prior connections.

With my interest in paediatric cardiology, ongoing research work, and commitment to making medical careers more accessible, I’m confident I could make a meaningful contribution to the society. I’d love the opportunity to help ensure cardiology is seen not only as a high-achieving specialty, but an inclusive and inspiring one too.
