I’ve really enjoyed being part of the Wednesday class, this society means a lot to me and I think it’s really important to stay connected with the community however we can. I’d love to help out with the Wednesday teaching sessions. As someone who’s dyslexic, I know how hard it can be to learn the complexities of English, so it’s something I really care about.

I’ve heard loads of great things about the society from committee members, and being involved in the Wednesday class has made me want to get even more involved. I’d love the chance to help with organising and planning!

I have been a part of STAR for a year now and my university year has been so much more joyful because of it. Getting to share through conversation is about teaching and helping the learners grow and develop their language, but it also teaches you so much about yourself too, forcing you to grow and develop with the learners. I hope I continue to be involved with this amazing group even more and I would be so grateful if you would consider me for the role.

Hi, my name is Oliver Xavier-Creak and I’m currently a Final Year English Literature Student and in the 2026/27 academic year I’ll be doing my Masters. I’ve been a part of STARS and the Wednesday classes since the beginning of the 2025/26 year and have had such a lovely time getting involved. Attending conversation club sessions at the refugee forum has been such a profoundly rewarding experience! Being able to support the English language development of the refugee community here in Leeds has allowed me to build relationships with both the local community and other like-minded students that have a genuine interest in giving back to the community. As a voluntary society, STARS is a great group to be a part of, full of intensely enthusiastic and kind members really invested in making a difference and doing great work. As the son of an immigrant I know how confusing English can be, and so supporting the great teaching work that happens in the Wednesday sessions is something I’m really passionate about. It is for these reasons that I’d really love the chance to be more hands on with the planning and organisation side of things!
