Hi all,

I'm Ellen a 2nd year PhD student and am running for Social & Wellbeing Secretary. I love everything plants and getting outdoors. If elected I'll help organise and host the events already proposed by the current committee and make sure that we have a fun calendar of events to look forward to. I think getting some social events that aren't necessarily 100% plant focused but bringing together us plant lovers will help us bind as a society and help build friendships!

I'm really looking forward to seeing this society grow and will be proud to take part in everything plant soc!

Hi I’m Abi, I’m a second year geology student and i love planning activities especially plant related !
I dont know how i can sell myself best other than tell you some of the ideas i currently have so ..
Im really quite interested in sustainable foraging so perhaps a walk through a nearby park or even somewhere more picturesque would be nice to learn about wild plants and how they can be used in our day to day life such as in foods or creating wild bird feeders ? Or even just learning about the folklore behind wild plants and how they evolved into the foods we eat today.
On the topic of foraging there is a lovely sustainable bar/ restaurant in York which uses seasonal produce to not waste food etc.
An activity i see myself doing is trying to grow plants in unconventional objects from charity shops such as a toy truck or old lampshade or a helmet etc - but perhaps more interesting things- this allows items to be repurposed and enjoy a new life without just ending up in landfill so a potential charity shopping trip or maybe bringing something you no longer need to the event and people can pick out what they’d like to attempt to repurpose as a pot could be a fun activity?
Another event could be creating self watering systems for certain plants?

Generally planting is quite therapeutic but i believe getting creative with plants makes things lively and well, you feel quite proud keeping a plant alive and happy in something unique that you’ve created or provided for the plant to help its growth.
I’d like to get involved and help everyone be proud plant parents :)
