Hey! My name is Eva Alzamora and I would love to be the next Head of the Bar Division for our society.

I am the first in my family to pursue law and I had no legal education prior to university. Therefore, I am no stranger to feeling confused and left behind. My aim is to make a career as a barrister seem more attainable to all.

Along with the aims I have already listed, I also wish to implement a 'Buddy System'. First year students would be paired with 2nd and 3rd years to act as a guide. This means that they could raise any questions or concerns they don’t feel chomfortable asking in groups or workshops!

Mubshrah for Head of the Bar Division
Hi everyone! My name is Mubshrah, and I would love to be your next Head of the Bar Division.

I am a first-year law student and an active member of the Law Society. In my first year alone, I have already taken significant steps towards the Bar. I have attended numerous networking events, represented the University of Leeds through the Bar Diversity Hub, built connections with practising barristers, secured two marshalling placements for this summer, and I am currently applying for mini pupillages. I will also be volunteering with Citizens Advice this summer, advising clients and gaining practical experience supporting members of the public.

I am the first person in my family to pursue a legal career, and I came to university without connections in the profession. As a Muslim woman who wears the hijab, I initially questioned whether someone from my background belonged at the Bar. Speaking to practising barristers and mentors helped me realise that your background is not a limitation; it reflects the determination and resilience needed to succeed.

Recently, I spoke to several first-year students who felt unsure about pursuing the Bar because they lacked exposure to the profession or did not see people like themselves represented. This is exactly why I care about the Bar Division.
My vision is centred on three principles: Vision, Action, and Momentum.
Making the Bar Accessible from Year One

The Bar should not feel distant. I want students to have clear guidance on the pathway to the Bar from the beginning of their degree, including mini-pupillages, Inns of Court scholarships, marshalling opportunities, and advocacy competitions.

Real Exposure to the Profession
I will organise regular panels with barristers, judges, and pupil barristers, alongside court visits, networking opportunities with chambers, and practical advocacy workshops so students can gain real insight into the profession.

Supporting Future Advocates
Applying for mini-pupillages and pupillages can feel overwhelming. I would like the Bar Division to offer workshops, guidance, and peer support so that students feel confident navigating this pathway.

Beyond career events, I want the Bar Division to foster a supportive community where students across all years can connect, share advice, and support each other in pursuing the Bar.

Being a first-year student means I will also be here longer to continue developing the division and building relationships with chambers and legal professionals.

My goal is simple: to create a Bar Division that offers real exposure, real opportunities, and a strong community of future advocates.

Hi everyone, I’m Abner, a second-year LLB student and the current Bar Division Vice Head. Over the past year, I’ve been closely involved in organising Bar Division events and supporting students interested in pursuing the Bar.

During my time in the role, I introduced the Bar Skills Development Initiative, the Bar Division Mentorship Scheme, and a comprehensive Bar resource pack, all aimed at making the pathway to the Bar clearer and more accessible for students.

If elected as Head of Bar Division, I will build on the strong foundation established this year by continuing successful initiatives such as the London Trip, court visits, and the Careers Dinner, while refining programmes like the Skills Development Initiative to focus on high-impact workshops and practical guidance.

My aim is simple: to ensure the Bar Division remains organised, supportive, and genuinely helpful for students exploring a career at the Bar.

Hi Everyone, I'm Lucy, and I would love to be your Head of the Bar Division!

My main aim for the Bar Division is this: I want it to feel as approachable and inclusive as possible for people from all backgrounds.
Some initiatives and ways I would do this is (1) Establishing "Belonging to the Bar" , where I would demystify the profession through clear and accessible guidance on routes to pupillages, funding & qualification. I would aim to partner with chambers to have regular talks on their route to the bar.
This would also include 1 to 1 mentoring, so those who feel unsure about the Bar and have questions can talk to those who are more certain about their career path, in an environment without judgement.

(2)"First time on Your Feet", I would make short accessible sessions covering voice, structure, confidence and courtroom etiquette, designed for those who are beginners to advocacy or want to improve. I would make some recorded feedback sessions too, where people can watch back their advocacy with supportive commentary from mentors.

(3) "Bar Connections", to make the Bar events more welcoming, I'd introduce a simple Bar Connections scheme where people can opt in, and are paired up with someone else; so no one has to attend alone. Alongside this, I'd run a mixture of socials, some drinking-related, some sober. This would be things like pub quizzes, nights out, coffee/matcha meet ups etc.

Ultimately, my goal is to create a Bar Division where everyone feels supported at every stage. If you ever have questions about the Bar or need guidance, I’m always here to help. It’s a challenging path, but I want every member of the division to feel confident and able to succeed.
