Assalamu Alaikum,
My name is Manar and I’m a 2nd year Biochemistry student and I’m running for Head of HR. Some of you may know me as the former/current social sister as I have had the pleasure of getting to know the wonderful Muslim community on campus and I am eager to continue with ISoc in a new capacity. My vision is to be a good advocate for muslims on campus by prioritising our faith and beliefs whilst addressing issues regarding the safety of Muslims in an increasingly unforgiving world. This would include working with the university and union to help in their goal of defining Islamophobia, as one of the first steps of addressing increasingly normalised islamophobia and prejudice. I believe through continued work with the Muslim Chaplain and the University we can create an even more accommodating and safe environment for Muslims on campus. I plan on working collaboratively with the Society’s committee to ensure it is a welcoming, inclusive and supportive society that benefits Muslims of all cultures and backgrounds whilst not jeopardising our core islamic principles and beliefs. I hope to be an easy point of contact for Muslim students and to help provide a safe and welcoming space for students :)

Assalam Alaikum, my name is Ali Nasrallah Kazim and I’m currently a first year Asia Pacific Studies student. Right now I’m the ISoc social secretary however, I would like to use the experiences I have gained from this role to be on core committee and become the Head of Student of Affairs.

In this role, some of the things I would be responsible for are: working with other societies, acting as the main point of contact with the LUU Politics and Engagement officer, LUU Faith Rep and the Muslim Chaplain. I intend to work with other societies and build relationships with them based on common grounds, but without compromising Islamic principles, and without working with organisations/people who are directly or indirectly promoting/normalising racism, Islamophobia or Apartheid. As Muslims, we are commonly subjected to racism and Islamophobia, I hope to keep in contact with the LUU and the Muslim Chaplain to ensure that Muslims have a safe environment on campus. Another thing I will try my best to ensure is to make Halal food more available on campus, Insha’Allah.

As this role requires a lot of political engagement, I am suitable for this role because I have had experience in political engagement in the UK, be that through activism, helping organise and steward protests and making sure that during these engagements, I do not compromise my Islamic beliefs and principles, Insha’Allah.
