Assalamualaikum, my name is Maariya and I’m a second-year medical student hoping to run for general secretory of Leeds ISOC 2023/24 inshallah. Coming to university post-Covid I was anxious about finding my people and being part of a wider community, which is exactly what I found with the sisters at ISOC. Over the last two years, taking part in events and volunteering for ISOC has been an incredibly rewarding experience and allowed me to get to know people from so many different backgrounds and really experience the sisterhood created. University can be daunting in many ways and being Muslim having events that we can enjoy and take part in without compromising our morals is incredibly important and is something that ISOC has been amazing at doing. I would love to have a hand in organising and running the administration side of the society to allow it to continue running smoothly and provide opportunities for Muslims on campus. And at the core of it, creating a space for like-minded people who share a common belief to come together and enjoy their time. During the summer breaks, I volunteered to organise activities and day trips for young children, working alongside a team of volunteers in a role that put me in control of admin and liaising with others which enabled me to gain skills that I believe can be transferred to my role as general secretary inshallah. I hope to be able to build on the amazing work that this year’s gen sec has done and carry it forward to the next year alongside the rest of the committee where I look forward to taking on the challenge inshallah.
