It is the President’s responsibility to oversee the charity. He/see will run the AGM and will appoint the Treasurer and Vice President at the AGM. The President must coordinate with his committee to ensure that all of the needs of the charity are met and the law, constitution and handbook are not broken.”

This role is largely broken down into two parts, local and national.

On a local level, the President oversees their committee as part of running the Chapter House. They provide direction to the committee and need to adapt to face new challenges. The President is expected to be well informed about all aspects of Make a Smile and the Handbooks. The Chapter House committee should be able to address most of the daily running of the Charity such as recruiting volunteers, organising events and fundraisers, organising costumes etc but need to be monitored by the President. They should be given advice and support to ensure that they are able to carry out their role and are aware of what is expected of them. The President needs to provide oversight and ensure tasks are being done for smooth operation. They will also oversee committee meetings as part of this. Any areas where a committee member is struggling with should be assisted by the President

Leadership is vital in this role and much of your time should be spent working on ways to get the most out of your team. At the start of each year, as part of handover, you should ensure you understand what drives each team member and give them opportunities to engage with aspects of the Charity that they are passionate about.

The national aspect of the President’s role is interacting with the Board of Trustees. They should be made aware of any major decisions or changes that are made at a committee meeting and a report into how your Chapter House is running should be given to the Board every other month. They should also communicate with you to ensure you are aware of any national changes that are made and how to implement them but also provide help if it is needed. They will allocate a budget at the start of the year and work to ensure targets are met. They can also be kept up-to-date using the history log, finances and costume spreadsheets and reflections log. It’s worth making yourself aware of what roles the Trustees have as they will be assisting your committee members at various points and may be able to offer additional assistance to you if needed.
