Assalamu Alaikum brothers and sisters I hope you and your families are all in good health. My Full name is Muhammad Haroon Hamid, and I am running to be the Treasurer of the University of Leeds Islamic Society. Before I tell you why I think I would be a good treasurer, I want to tell you about the importance of Islam in my Life. So I was born Muslim Alhamdullilah, but not in a really religious household. My parents are the most amazing parents in the world but not the most religious, so when I was younger I didn’t particularly understand the importance of praying Namaaz 5 times a day and the beauty of our religion, which is a blessing. As I’ve got older I have gotten closer to my Deen and I continue to try to be a better Muslim and earn my place in Jannah. My motivation to be Treasurer stems from me wanting to serve Allah and help the Islamic society reach its goals and make it a better place in whatever capacity I can. I hope if I am elected I will be surrounding myself with other Muslims who also have the same purpose as me and will push me to be a better Muslim. I’m currently on my industrial placement year at Nationwide building society in the treasury department as part of my Banking and Finance degree. So my strength lies within Numbers, and that’s what I enjoy most, working with numbers. During my placement year in the treasury department I’ve helped produced budgets, financial year-end reports, and it’s helped me build my stakeholder engagement skills. So dealing with financial stakeholders is something I will enjoy and InshAllah I believe I am good negotiator so I may be able to negotiate more funds for the society and help the society achieve its goals. I hope to provide diversity of thought as a member of the society and promote new ideas, making it better for every Muslim, as well as Non-Muslims interested in our beautiful religion. Throughout my academic journey in Economics and Finance, I have honed my analytical skills, developing a comprehensive understanding of financial principles, budgeting techniques, and investment strategies. This knowledge will enable me to efficiently manage the society's funds, optimise our financial resources, and make informed decisions that align with our goals and values.
In addition to my academic pursuits, I have actively contributed to the student community as a course representative. This experience has allowed me to cultivate essential leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills. As Treasurer, I will foster open and transparent communication with all members, ensuring that their voices are heard, and their suggestions are considered in our financial decisions.
Furthermore, my hands-on experience in running a profitable business has provided me with valuable insights into financial management, cash flow analysis, and strategic planning. I intend to leverage this experience to explore potential revenue streams and innovative fundraising opportunities for the society. My goal is to enhance our financial stability and allocate resources effectively to fund engaging events and initiatives that enrich our members' experiences.
As a dedicated resident of Leeds, I have developed a profound understanding of our local community's needs and aspirations. I am committed to utilising this knowledge to tailor our financial strategies, ensuring that the society's contributions have a positive and lasting impact on the lives of our members and the broader community.
