Assalaamu alaikum everyone. My name is Umar, I’m about to go into my second year of university and I’m running to be your next VP brother.

Over the year I have benefitted immensely from all the events offered by ISOC such as laser tag, charity week, the Malham cove hike and as a regular attendee of the weekly 5-a-side football. This has all meant that I have been able to establish a Muslim support base here in Leeds and gotten my university career off to a good start full of brotherhood. Knowing first-hand the benefits of this, I want to run for VP to ensure brotherhood building remains a priority for ISOC so that new and current Muslim students can also benefit. I am grateful to the outgoing committee for all their hard work which I saw particularly during charity week as a volunteer. I would be honoured to be able to continue and build on this work, on committee, and offer more exciting and engaging events in the coming year.

Prior to attending university, I volunteered at my local mosque where, Alhamdulilah, I was able to help in the day-to-day running and engaged with students and parents. This has developed my confidence and engagement skills to support me as VP. I realise that the role of VP requires a huge level of commitment and perseverance on my part, and bi’ithnillah, I am ready to offer this. This year I have engaged with local mosques in Leeds and a priority for me as VP would be strengthening this connection with Muslim students and the mosque communities so that we can all insha’Allah live better as Muslims collectively in Leeds. As VP I will also be overseeing the education team and will ensure that students on campus are able to access a range of different classes and allow us to promote Islam on campus. It will also mean talks will be put in place regarding issues and misconceptions for Muslim and non-Muslim students to attend.
