We as a team should have 1 goal coming into this season: to finish top 3. Easier said than done; therefore, I propose that all 1st + 2nd years prioritise going to most if not all competitions held in the North/ midlands. Gaining techniques is one thing, but being able to implement them during competitions is a vital skill. My second proposal is that after the 1hr warmup, I’ll nominate a member from each weapon to run specific drills on things they are unsure about. This could range anywhere from a simple beat disengage, to a flick. Targeted practice at the start, as opposed to free fencing, will elevate our game, which I can guarantee.
When it comes to me, I’ve been fencing from the age of 9 and won my first county-level medal just six months after. Having ten years of competition experience means that I’ve seen both sides of the coin, winning & losing. I’ve been described as easy to talk to as well as a good listener, so any quarrels, whether that be fencing related or not, I’d be more than happy to help, judgement-free, of course! I also like fashion, so the Gryphons patch will be revitalised into something sleeker for the upcoming season.
Having achieved a British ranking of 86 after just three events puts me in good stead to reach the top 50 next season. I will carry that same ambition and drive to the rest of the team, hoping that we all climb the leaderboard. The Leeds fencing team has the potential to rival those who dominate northern divisions, and my job as a captain is to put us in a position to do so. An opportunity I want to have the pleasure of leading.
