I am Zheng Rui Luk or you can just call me Enson. I am currently a 2nd-year Computer Science student. I am from Hong Kong. The part that the society amazed me a lot is the cheerful vibe. Advance fencers actively help beginners, laughter in training. These are all the things I love in this society and I wish to pass them on to the new members of the society too.
Started from knowing no one to making a lot of friends around. Sure it is hard to meet others with just regular training. In my opinion, social events are as important as regular training. We have a big society with members at different levels. Wouldn't it be nice to let us all know each other? Covid hit us hard but I am certain that some events can be organized to keep our members active and participating.
As an introvert, I surely understand the struggle to talk first in every conversation. This is the part when alcohol helps. Organizing alcoholic events such as pub socials, helps people to talk even if they are shy. This is 100% proven by myself. If you are not into alcoholic socials, non-alcoholic socials can be organized too. We can start with some ice-breaking games to some hiking. There are a lot of fine places to hike near Leeds!
There might be arguments when the matches get intense and that is totally normal and common. I do hope that every argument only stays in the matches but if they did not, I have the responsibility to help solve them. Fencing is a sport that everyone should enjoy. I wish to keep the fencing society a friendly and cheerful place where everyone can relax, laugh and sweat.

I've had a great time this year getting to know everyone, and can't wait for the next!

If elected, I'll work proactively and enthusiastically alongside my co-secretary to organise and deliver a wide array of social events, from nights out to outdoor activities and trips. The social aspect of our club is one of its greatest strengths, and I want that to thrive and grow next year. I will bring back favourites from this year and a host of new activities to bring people together and have an amazing time (axe-throwing? airsoft? cinema trips? barbeques? bottomless brunch?).

And of course that's not the only responsibility of this role. I take the welfare of our members seriously, and will ensure that people are kept safe during events and nights out, as well as providing an approachable and non-judgemental ear for people who have concerns about the club or other matters.

I have strong experience behind me that I will bring to the position, having served on the committee and organised socials for my old fencing club at the University of Derby, and been literally paid to organise activities for a year when I worked as a Resident Graduate in a school.

As an international student, a major reason why I now feel so at home in Leeds is this club, and I think a big part of that can be attributed to the socials I got to attend. Our socials are amazing spaces to get to know the other club members better and to spend time with the friends you've already made. I want to help other new members such as myself feel welcome and be a part of creating the safe and fun-filled space that is this club. If I can contribute by organising socials and facilitating everyone enjoying themselves safely, I will do my best as social and wellbeing sec.

In terms of experience I've been on the committee that was responsible for organising my year's senior ball in high school. The ball ended up gettting cancelled when we were already half-way through preparations because of covid but the experience remains.
(This isn't really a credential but I *am* the mom friend so I guess that helps with being concerned about other people's wellbeing lol)
