Since I started at Leeds in September 2021, I have become a regular and dedicated member of the Fencing Club. I have valued the role that the committee have played over the past year, ensuring that it is a well-run and sociable club, with great competition results. I would like to play a part in the ongoing running of the club and feel like my excellent organisational and IT skills will heavily benefit this role. After all, everything looks better on a spreadsheet!! I am keen to work with the committee to secure current and future sponsorship opportunities and learn a few DIY skills from the “experts” to ensure that all equipment is in good working order. Finally, I have already had some experience this year supporting the current kit secretary, so feel like I have a good understanding of what the role would involve.

As President of the club these past two years, one of my primary focuses has been on expanding the club's inventory of kit. Before this, the club's electric fencing kit was incredibly limited, and not being able to find working kit was a huge roadblock to the progression of beginners and the development of the club.

Already during this time we have massively expanded our inventory of kit, which has allowed us to massively increase the number of people borrowing kit to fence electric and attend competitions which I believe has been a huge success.

However there is much more to do. If we are to continue maintaining our kit as the club grows, I believe it is important to create the new position of kit secretarty. This will serve two purposes; it will lighten the load of next year's president, allowing them to focus on other aspects of the growth of the club, and it will allow the kit secretaries to dedicate all of their time to their roles, rather than it being the side project of the president.

As kit secretary I will continue to focus on acquiring new kit for the club, maintaining and repairing the club's existing kit, and for the first time, work with clothing companies to make club socks and improved club training gear.

It’s been an amazing journey to be part of fencing for the last three years and I would love the opportunity to give back to the club. Kit secretary would be a great fit for my skills and love of problem solving. Tinkering whether when building a computer, fixing my bedroom fan or the bones of a mouse has always been a great way to keep myself occupied and so why not continue while supporting a society I care about?

Through multiple volunteering roles, DOFE and university I have honed my skills of organisation which will help keep the clubs inventory maintained. Teamwork developed from part-time work has taught me the importance of communication which will become vital when interacting with the treasurer, external armourers and other members of the society. I look forward to the challenges that I can overcome while being kit secretary all while giving back to the club.
