Hi! I’m Neve, I use she/her pronouns and I am nominating myself for Publicity Officer 2024/25.

I am currently in my second year of studying criminology and criminal justice.

My interests lie in gender and queer rights, with abuses of such vulnerable communities happening all over the world. But also, in the intersection of these with race, mental health, disability, poverty and (as I am a criminologist) crime, and vulnerability to crime. I joined this society because I wanted to enact real, perceivable change from the ground up. While I do think there’s something to be said for changing a system from the inside, I do not believe the real change I want to foster, can come from within the institutions. Progress needs to be made by groups and communities coming together. Groups such as Amnesty.

I have been a member of amnesty for a year now and am eager to take on increased responsibilities. Sophie has done great things with our socials so far and I am excited to follow in her footsteps and build on the progress she has made. My main aim is to increase engagement on our social media pages by producing more frequent content to raise awareness of current events as they unfold, as well as maintaining the weekly human rights round ups. This would also hopefully inspire more people to join our amazing society and get involved.

I also think, in these trying times, it is important to uplift and applaud the amazing work people on campus have been doing in the world of Human Rights. To this goal, I propose a weekly socials spotlight on positive events or actions that have been enacted in Leeds or on Uni of Leeds campus. I am very passionate about bringing forward ideas that can ensure Amnesty remains a vibrant, diverse, and active society. Part of this is highlighting positive things happening in our community, so we can keep inspiring change.

This is where Amnesty comes in. I am hopeful that this year we can take a further active role in protesting and activism. As well as teaming up with other societies more frequently. In times like this, working together has never been so important. Especially when some of the institutions we must fight are quite close to home… (Free Palestine in every single sense of the word). In line with these aims I want to help foster a stronger sense of community among our members, not just within the committee. I would like to see more socials as well as amnesty meetings and events.

As far as the specifics for this role- I really enjoy curating my own Instagram. I take pride in my Instagram stories and have always enjoyed creating posts and posters etc… – if you’d like to have a look then head to my Instagram highlights @_neve_13 (It is basically my portfolio and references, and not a cheeky bit of self-promo). I am also an avid writer and believe I would be adept at creating accurate and well-informed infographics and posts (criminology involves a large amount of research). As mentioned earlier, I believe I can bring some fresh ideas to the role of socials secretary, and I would take pride in creating visual content on behalf of the society, should I be elected.
