I have been involved with Amnesty since I was 13 partaking in sponsored silences, protests and other charity events to raise awareness and fight for human rights. Having attended Jamnesty throughout my first 2 years at university and attending weekly Amnesty meetings throughout the past year, I have seen the dedication and passion of the current committee which has inspired me to take a more present role within the society.

In my role as school representative for Physics and Astronomy, I have developed strong communication skills and am proactive in responding to and sending emails, organising and attending meetings and dealing with other agendas. I have organised and run several successful events for physics students and effectively promoted them. Alongside this I have also had a hand in helping to run the Leeds EPS Faculty instagram and responding to queries via social media. Therefore, I am confident that I have the skills to successfully take on the position of communications officer.

Leeds Amnesty has been vocal on campus this year spreading awareness for LGBTQ+ rights and voicing concerns for the ongoing conflict in Palestine as well as hosting two incredibly successful Jamnesty events. My goal moving forward is for Amnesty’s presence on campus to continue to grow exposing more students to human rights issues and encouraging them to take a stance. I think the collaboration with other societies this year has been invaluable for learning different perspectives and presenting a unified front for human rights and I hope this can be continued and encouraged.
