The President is the leader and primary representative of the Civil Engineering Society. This is a high-responsibility role that requires strong leadership, initiative, and commitment to the society's development and impact within the School of Civil Engineering and the wider university community.

As President, you will:

  • Lead and manage the committee: Chair regular committee meetings, set meeting agendas, delegate tasks effectively, and ensure all committee members are supported in fulfilling their roles.
  • Set the strategic direction of the society for the academic year, outlining goals, priorities, and initiatives that align with members’ interests and the society’s long-term vision.
  • Oversee society operations, ensuring events, projects, and activities run smoothly, on time, and within budget.
  • Act as the main point of contact between the society and external stakeholders, including the School of Civil Engineering, the Leeds University Union, academic staff, sponsors, and professional bodies like ICE or IStructE.
  • Drive student engagement by working with the committee to create a welcoming and inclusive environment for all civil engineering students, from freshers to final years.
  • Represent the society at formal events, meetings, and inter-society collaborations, advocating for the needs and interests of civil engineering students.
  • Lead key projects, including large-scale events like Civil Engineering Ball, networking evenings, site visits, industry talks, and society rebranding or development initiatives.
  • Ensure continuity and succession planning, by maintaining society documents, guiding new committee members, and passing on knowledge to future leaders.

This role is ideal for someone who is confident, organised, good at decision-making, and enthusiastic about building a strong and active civil engineering community. It’s a chance to make a lasting impact, grow as a leader, and connect with students, academics, and professionals in the field.
