Since joining BPM last year, I have been able to experience the diversity of the genres within electronic music to a massive extent. Coming from a background listening to mostly Grime and UKG, it’s been insightful to learn about the depths of the scene, whether that be the tracks currently doing the rounds on the nightclub circuits, or some truly underground niches that members have been showcasing.

As Radio Manager, I’d have three main priorities.

Firstly, I would utilise BPM’s LSR slot as a platform for DJs and producers from underrepresented backgrounds. BPM is a welcoming space, and I believe the radio show should be used to provide equity and highlight talent from those who face challenges from inequalities that are unfortunately present in the wider scene. BPM is for everyone.

Secondly, the BPM radio show would act as springboard for new and upcoming DJs and producers within the society. For those who want to play out, starting that journey can be difficult, radio can provide experience in playing to others (a nervous excitement which can be difficult to emulate), back-to-backs, and using CDJ/radio equipment. Also, many members are electronic music producers, and I would use the radio show for the up-and-coming production talent within the society to get all-important airtime for their tracks.

Finally, I would aim for the radio show to highlight the genre diversity of electronic music that I mentioned earlier, and to showcase amazing tracks from genres/labels that have gone under the radar or have become more obscure over time. If people tune into radio shows and discover one new track that they’ll put into a playlist, or onto a USB, then I’d consider that set a success.
