Hey everyone,

I'm Oly, I’m a second-year computing student and I’ve spent all my time at uni involved in LUUHC therefore I'm excited to announce my candidacy for the position of treasurer. I've had the privilege of serving as the social secretary for the past year. My journey with the hiking club has been incredibly fulfilling, and I'm eager to continue contributing to its success by seeking your support for the role of treasurer.

Why should you consider voting for me? Firstly, my tenure as a member of this year's committee has provided me with invaluable insights into the inner workings of our club. Through my role as social secretary, I've gained practical experience in budget management, learning the dos and don'ts along the way. This firsthand experience has equipped me with a solid understanding of our club's financial needs and how best to allocate resources for maximum benefit.

If elected as treasurer, my primary objective would be to ensure the smooth functioning of the club while maximizing the value our members receive from their membership. I'm committed to maintaining transparency and accountability in financial matters, ensuring that every decision made is in the best interest of the club and its members.

Together, let's work towards a year filled with exciting adventures, camaraderie, and unforgettable experiences. With your trust and support, I'm confident that I can effectively fulfill the responsibilities of treasurer and contribute positively to the continued success of our hiking club.

A brief manifesto from me, as I don’t believe treasurer roles are about having reems of ideas; rather, a good treasurer champions the ideas of the rest of the committee. Now, that is not to say I would allow financially injurious decisions to evade my scrutiny! There is a balance to be found, a bealach if you will, between the attractive summits of ‘lots of spending’ and ‘staying afloat’.

The treasurer finds this balance through keeping our priorities as a club in mind. Personally, I do not think this is always hiking! You may disagree, and so may another candidate for the role. This hints that there is a decision that you, the voting member, must make. Not only are you seeking the most prudent candidate, or your favourite, or the one with the most Hardcore Hiker Christmas party awards, but also the one who you are most ideologically aligned with! Which of us shares your outlook on life? Whose soul best mirrors your own? Your sense of connectedness is what will determine the path the club takes in our short time here and beyond. John Muir, who by all accounts quite enjoyed a hike, once said that when one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world. The LUUHC treasurer role is no exception.

Unfortunately for me I don’t often grant people access to such depths of my being! On this occasion you will have to make do with my experience and succinct biography:

I’m Joe, a third-year chemistry PhD student, born and bred in Leeds. I’ve been in the club for two years now, and whilst I have never peered behind the curtain at how this committee runs, I have been a treasurer and president for another large society in my younger years. That club is still running, which I consider a testament to my performance of those roles! I think adjacent committee experience is valuable, as it brings knowledge of how to generally get things done alongside some fresh ideas.

One thing that is important to me is accessibility, and this is a key theme that I would try and realise in my own conduct as treasurer and in that of the wider committee. This is multipronged - I think accessibility can be improved both through reducing barriers to getting involved in our club, be they financial, social, or otherwise, and through empowering our members to go out and have their own adventures. This means more education and better access to resources, so they may do so safely, mindfully, and joyfully. Perhaps that should be my punchy closing line?
