Hi, my name is Josh, I’m in my 3rd year studying Computer Science with Mathematics. I’ve been in the club for nearly 2 and a half years now, and LUUHC has really helped me meet a load of new people, whether that has been somebody I’ve chatted with on a hike, having a few (too many) drinks at the Library Pub, or becoming some of my closest friends. It wouldn’t be an understatement to say hiking has become an extremely important part of my life. In my final year of studies, I really wanted to give something back to the club and felt my natural habit to organise things lent itself to the role of Transport Secretary.
I hope to keep up the good work Harry has been doing the past year and ensure that the club continues running smoothly. I’m a naturally organised person, I love setting alarms on my phone, making spreadsheets, and always being prepared for any situation, I carry around plasters in my university bag because I was caught out once scratching my finger, and I know these skills will carry over to being the transport secretary. It’s a role that requires me to be on it every week or fortnight, and hope you entrust this responsibility to me.
A key part of this role is communication, both with drivers and the union for car bookings. I’m someone who can put on a tough face to get through the nonsense the Activities Office can sometimes subject us too, and I’m not afraid to triple, quadruple or quintuple message drivers to ensure that everything keeps organised. I promise that at any point in the week I can be in the union or down with the coach company dealing with any complications that may arise, and every Friday before a trip I can be at the uni getting the drivers sorted out and ready to go, to ensure the weekend runs smoothly.
Before going any further, I think it is important to clarify that I don’t have a driver's license, however I do not think this is one bit of a problem. Firstly, it means on trips I can always be at my phone, ready to respond to calls or chat if anything goes wrong. Secondly, it allows me to stay impartial, my perspective on driving will be that of a passenger, and I’ll be able to take feedback directly from drivers to make the transportation experience comfortable for passengers and drivers alike.
In this role, I’d hope to increase the number of drivers the club has, and get as many people Midas certified as possible, so that the no matter what, there’s someone to get us there.
Outside of the main responsibilities, I’d like to work on expanding the types of trips it's possible to go on. These could be journeys on the train, or smaller hikes closer to Leeds (there’s some alright countryside just past the university) that we can drag our non-hiking friends on.
Despite all this, I hope that the transport is never a problem, that trips and Sunday hikes run smoothly, and that the only people bothered by me are the Activities Office. If nobody else has to think about how we’re going to get to the mountains, then I will have succeeded at the role.
To conclude, I want to thank everyone, whether or not you decide to vote for me, and look forward to the next year in hiking, where hopefully I’ll be working alongside the rest of the committee to not only keep the club running as smoothly as it already is, but to improve it.
