Hi, I’m Layal and I’m running for Safety and Welfare for 2024/25. This year, I have designed and advised for stage and have also Production Managed, which has given me a lot of experience working with new designers and dealing with the stress of balancing a degree and multiple shows. To help deal with this stress, I want to strengthen support systems for Production Managers and new Designers as these roles can be overwhelming. I have learnt that having someone to vent to has been very helpful in reducing stress so I would like to implement more PM welfare checks as well checks on new Designers, ensuring that they are comfortable and aware of all the resources that are available to them such as the role guidance packs and the knowledge of more experienced designers.

Days such as Load In and Load Out are very stressful, particularly for new members so a priority will be ensuring that new members are comfortable with what they are doing and not pushing themselves too hard. I would like to emphasise that anyone can message me at any point if you need an output or a chat!

I would also like to be in closer contact with the societies we work with to ensure that they do not impose unrealistic expectations on Designers. I would like to make them aware of how much effort we put into our shows and not demand new things post finalization. I would also work with the Publicity and Communications as well as Events Officers to break down the barrier between Backstage and the societies we work with.

As a stagey, I am workshop trained and also ladder trained so I’m aware of how to use equipment safely. As PM, I have dealt with safety documents and know what to look for in risk assessments. Jess, the current Safety and Welfare Officer has done an incredible job with creating a safe and inclusive space in the Riley and within the society. I would like to continue what she has done by maintaining a safe and enjoyable working environment and ensuring that everyone is ultimately enjoying what they are doing as we are a student learning society! :)
