Hi, I’m Max and I’m running for Equipment and Training officer. In my first year with backstage I have enjoyed getting involved with many shows, and I would love to take this opportunity to give back to the society.

As part of this role I aim to ensure that our equipment and stores are organised and well stocked. This year I have crewed shows across different departments, which has given me knowledge and experience with the many different pieces of equipment used across the society. My experience with the electrical engineering involved in my degree has also given me an understanding of how equipment functions technically.

I would like to organise more training for our members to encourage more people to get involved with different departments and gain a better understanding of different areas of backstage. This would include designer training, to give more people the confidence to make the step from general crew to designer.

Wow what a fun year it’s been! In fact, I’ve enjoyed being your E&T officer so much that I’d love to do it again next year.

I’ve had a great time with Backstage society this year, being an LD, DSM, SD, HM and advisor. I have a wide knowledge of the society, having worked in all these departments (particularly lighting!) as well as AV. In the future I’d still like to try more roles, particularly in sound and doing more advising.

Next year I’ll be going into my final year of studying electronic and electrical engineering. My course enables me to have a good understanding of technical Backstage equipment, and I’m not afraid to solve problems using initiative, no matter how big or small. My placement last year really helped me build my communication, organisation and problem solving. This comes in very useful when managing our equipment, such as when something needs fixing or other societies want to borrow stuff.

Backstage has helped me grow my confidence. As E&T officer, I’ve loved giving new and existing members confidence in their roles through training sessions, particularly during Expo week. This year I organised multiple training sessions for each department, both designer and general crew. I found training sessions so useful when I was a new member, so I’m committed to ensuring there are termly designer and 101 training sessions next year too for new and existing members, particularly during Expo week.

I’m an approachable person and always offer as much help as I can when people are stuck. I will actively look to offer help to new members in a fun way. I’ve met some awesome people through Backstage, and it’s always amazing to watch a show come together from such a wide variety of talent, showing the importance of the society.

Also, I hope I’ve not caused any consumables shortages this year. Expect the same next year! Having our equipment in order and well stocked, helps keep the society functional for everyone to enjoy.

I’ve had a great time as E&T officer this year, doing lots of shows and coming to lots of socials. Having good relationships with the societies we work with will ensure that our shows can continue to be as unforgettably fun as possible for many more people in the future. I’d love to continue being a part of next year’s committee, offering new opportunities to others, and helping us deliver the best shows the Riley has ever seen!
