Hi LUUWILS! I’m Jie En (better known as Ashley), a first-year Economics and Finance student. A couple of fun facts about me: I’m a huge matcha lover 🍵, a theatre enthusiast 🎭, and I’ve been told I have the energy of an excited puppy!

Why vote for me?
•⁠ ⁠I’m passionate about supporting and uplifting women, and this started back in high school when my team and I led over 100 girls in Girls' Brigade and coordinated state-level events. That experience showed me the power of guidance and community, and I want to bring that same energy to the mentor scheme. With my experience as a Student Ambassador and in leadership roles, I’ll work to make the programme more engaging, supportive, and valuable for everyone involved.

What will I do if elected?
•⁠ ⁠Just like how Smart Works (a charity I have been volunteering for since last October) provides women with the support and confidence to enter/ re-enter the workforce, I will strive to create a mentorship programme that empowers and uplifts. I will strengthen the mentor-mentee experience by facilitating more engaging events, structured support systems, and accessible resources. The end goal is to create a dynamic network where women feel supported, inspired, and confident in their career paths.

WILS has been the highlight of my first year, from making friends at the People Bingo event to volunteering at the Empower Conference 2025. I have enjoyed everything WILS has to offer and am keen to help improve the society next year as the Mentoring Scheme Director 25/26.

This year I had the privilege of being a mentee on the WILS mentoring scheme. My mentor Alys Nichols from EY (one of our sponsors) was able to give me valuable insights and I was able to build a meaningful connection with her. I have been inspired my mentor and I want to ensure others have this experience too!!!

As someone who has experience as a maths & economics mentor and as a WILS mentee, I know what makes the mentoring scheme successful & how to make the most of the scheme.

As mentoring scheme director 25/26, I hope to:

* Increase networking opportunities and increase the number of mentors that are sponsors, through the connections I have made during my various work experiences
* Ensure there are mentors from a diverse range of industries, including marketing, law, finance, engineering & many more
* Provide updates on career opportunities for first years
* Organise socials/activities to help strengthen the relationship between mentee and mentors
* Help mentees establish goals for what they want to achieve from the mentorship scheme & provide support to ensure theses goals are met

About me:
I am a 2nd year human resource management student from Saudi Arabia! My personal background and my course have played a great part in my interest in mentoring schemes within societies!

Some experience:
During first year, I was part of the LUU’s Liberation and International Student Network, where I was able to work with the LUU to be the first point of contact for students facing any concerns at the university or the union, especially in relations to women’s or international students’ issues. This year I am also working with the LUU on campaigns that improve welfare as well as equality at the university.

Why I want to do it:
My experience made me realise the importance of mentoring schemes what benefits they have on both the mentees and the mentors in the short and long term, it is also important to match each mentee to their most suitable mentor, therefore, my aims as a mentoring director are to ensure that each mentee is matched to their best mentor based on their course or desired career, that they are provided the support that they expect, and that both mentees and mentors are having a positive mentoring experience where they are gaining new skills and building a network!
