Welcome to Boxing
The Amateur Boxing Society caters for all skill levels, from complete beginners to those with previous experience. Whether you are simply looking to get fit, or want to get involved in sparring, or even competing, the club is an inclusive and friendly environment which will help you reach your full potential.
Our sessions are attended by both men and women and offer a high intensity workout which is more effective and more exciting than any gym session! The sessions consist of whole body fitness exercises, technical drills, pad work and sparring. The exercises we conduct are great fat burners and help tone the body, thus allowing our members to become fighting fit.
Sparring is optional and contact is always light. Beginners can begin working with just pads in pairs, and then move onto body sparring if they wish. Those with more experience can begin with body or even head sparring. All sessions are supervised and led by professional instructors, who have had many years of experience. Anyone wishing to spar, must fill out a safety form at the club and have their own gumshield. No gumshield, no sparring.
Competing
The Amateur Boxing Society regularly competes in the BUCS which is held once a year often in Portsmouth. The club also takes part in bi-annual Varsity fights against Leeds Beckett University which, as a result of the close rivalry between the two universities, is an exciting social! For those who are less experienced, the club regularly holds interspar competitions which gives those who enter a friendly introduction to a real boxing match. We have close connections with Tigers Amateur club and also invite our advanced members to train with them.

What to bring
Gloves, pads and any other equipment is provided by the club and Tigers Gym (However, if you have your own gloves, skipping rope, hand wraps etc. then, by all means, bring them along!)
There are only a few items you will need to train:
Non-restrictive clothing– you will be moving a lot so wear something loose and comfortable the typical dress code of a boxer is a t-shirt/vest and shorts. If you are going to spar we recommend an old t shirt.
Trainers – comfortable footwear is a MUST. If you are going to train a lot we recommend investing in a pair of boxing boots as they are far more lightweight and provide ankle support.
Handwraps – optional but highly recommended and cost practically nothing.
Gumshield – we will NOT let you spar without a gumshield. You can pick one up at any chemist or sports shop. If you aren’t sparring, then don’t worry.
Socials
Come along to our socials to get to know the people you train with better. Regular socials will take place and will be advertised after training and on the Instagram and Facebook group; with special socials happening based around fight nights and events. The committee will always be present at club socials, so you’ll never wonder whether others will turn up or not.
