About Group

BioSoc is an award-winning society representing students from across the University of Leeds who are interested in all things biology - from anatomy to zoology - and particularly those who study within the Faculty of Biological Sciences.

Our aim is to put on socials, events, collaborations and sports teams throughout the year to allow members to meet and spark friendships with others who share the same love of biology.

Sports

BioSoc members can join our BioSoc netball and football teams for free! No experience is needed, just come along and have a laugh! We have regular training, matches against other departmental societies, and sports team socials – look out for more information on our Facebook and Instagram pages.

Membership

This year, we’re changing our membership structure.

Standard Membership

We felt it was right to lower our costs due to COVID-19 restrictions so we slashed our Standard Membership in half – yes, that’s right, 50% less! So, you can now get a one-year Standard Membership to BioSoc for the absolute bargain price of £4!! This gives you access to all of BioSoc’s social events.

Academic Membership Add-On

We’ve introduced a new Academic Membership Add-On that gives you access to all of BioSoc’s academic and employability events too. This membership add-on is FREE for all Faculty of Biological Sciences students.

So to get the benefits of both BioSoc’s academic and social arm, purchase a Standard Membership for £4.00 + a FREE Academic Membership Add-On! What a bargain!

Events

We hold a range of social and academic events throughout the year, catering for everyone! Things will naturally be a little different this year, but we’ve worked hard and we have a fantastic pipeline of COVID-safe events planned. Have a look at our social media channels to see all of our previous and upcoming events!

Academic Events

This new arm of BioSoc tends to focus on personal development and employability related talks, seminars and workshops. We get a whole host of external speakers in on topics such as life science law, conservation, diversity and inclusion, studying abroad and more! These events are open to anyone with a free Standard BioSoc Membership.

Social Events

The social side of BioSoc focuses on helping you get to know your coursemates and spark friendships with others who have the same love of the biosciences. In the year of COVID-19, we’ve inevitably had to go virtual with pub quizzes, bingo, Kahoot, competitions, bake-offs and more.

Hopefully in 2021, we can get back to hosting our regular in-person events including nights out, Otley Runs, Pot Your Own Plant, Attenborough and Chill and actual pub quizzes in a real pub!

Annual Trip Abroad

BioSoc also run an annual 3 or 4-night trip abroad, normally around the Easter break. Most recently we’ve had fantastic trips to Amsterdam and Prague – at absolute bargain prices. Unfortunately, COVID-19 restrictions mean we can’t organise one just yet but as soon as anything changes, we’ll try our best to make a trip happen.
