This is the position with all the power. Head Honcho. El Presidenté. Le Grand Fromage. The only committee role for those who desire unlimited influence, unrestricted authority, who want to shape Leeds University Union Hiking Club in their image.

Or so I thought when I took on the role. Sadly, the reality is far less exciting.

You are responsible, fundamentally, for everything that happens in the club. As you may have noticed, there’s quite a lot going on. This is great when things are going well and you can bask in the glory and praise heaped upon you by your loyal subjects. Naturally, however, when things aren’t going quite as swimmingly, it’s your job to make sure things are resolved. Unlike most leadership positions, you can’t palm everything off on your subordinates, asking for their resignations to cover your own back. Good luck.

As President, attending lots of trips and socials is really important to make sure new members feel welcomed and involved. You’re going to be a recognisable face for a lot of people, so it’s really helpful to be friendly and approachable (easier said than done, I know). At least attempt to look like you’re having a good time, and try to conceal the inevitable mental breakdown you’ll be having by November.

Running the weekly committee meetings is another important part of the role, making sure your fellow committee members are performing their roles as they should be. You’ll be involved in the key decisions the club makes, and offering support to others as and when required. Often, the President will be the first point of contact with the union - lucky you. It’s important to keep tabs on their emails and communications and pass the relevant information on to the rest of the committee. Planning and organising leader training is one of the more rewarding jobs you’ll have to do, selecting who attends summer training in September and overseeing the applications process for winter training in January. And of course, ordering committee jumpers is the most important thing you’ll be doing during your twelve-month tenure.

The club has a policy that those running for President should have done one year in one of the other committee roles. It is helpful to have experience with the running the club already, to be aware of its inner workings and sinister machinations. Good organisational skills will go a long way to making your life easier, along with an adaptable and forward-thinking mindset. Having people skills – or at least pretending to have them for as long as necessary – is also vital to complete the role successfully.

You’ll be entering into a long succession of great leaders, the likes of Emma Cooper, Sophie Walker and Ruth Trainor, even Joseph Lawley - so no pressure. But remember: if I can manage to be President for a year without burning the club to the ground, then I’m sure you can too.
